Born in Doncaster Yorkshire in June 1960 I can just about remember the Mods bombing around on their scooters. The music of the era obviously made a lasting impression on me as many of my favourite tracks come from the golden era of the mid-sixties. In my teenage years I moved 200 miles south to Banbury, Oxfordshire.During the mid seventies I attended a youth club run by organiser John Washbourne(Washy) who was an old Torch goer. This guy had some great records and he introduced me to the music. He also put me in touch with some of the other local soulies and one in particular Eddie Hubbard taught me a lot about the record collecting side of the scene. Washy used to run a minibus up to Wigan Casino and other events in the midlands. When I reached the ripe old age of 16 my parents allowed me to go on one of these excursions. Once inside the Casino I was hooked. Although I knew very few of the tunes being played, that didnt seem to matter, the atmosphere was absolutely incredible, I had found a place that felt just right, a place that felt special. That was it, I was part of the scene. Every weekend treking up and down the country, collecting rare records and making lots of new friends and like minded vinyl junkies.
In 1980 I moved to Cheltenham to be nearer friends that I had met on the scene, I continued to attend soul events and was a regular guest DJ at various events in the area.
Like most people I took a break from the scene in the mid 80s, Sold off half of my collection to fund other things, and for about 5 years I regretted selling those prized records, So in the early 90s I started collecting again.
Since then I have been a collector of the prized black stuff. I am constantly amazed by the amount of good music still being discovered even today.
I have been a DJ since the mid seventies and think that the experience I have gained has helped me to be able to read a crowd and put a great set together.
Here is a list of my Favourite tracks that have become regular sounds in my DJ sets both around the country and with the SOULFUSION crowd.
